What it is
Have you ever had a conversation with someone and things took a turn and the person’s response was “it is what it is!” At first I deemed it coincidental then after multiple occurrences, I realized there was more to this statement. Now what exactly does “it is what it is" mean? As if whatever you say or do, a person is now excused from responsibility. Or the term justifies the situation to becoming acceptable as if there is nothing else to be done. For an example, a man no longer has to take care of his children. The woman is left with the brunt of the work because, “it is what it is!” or vice versa? Or people who commit terrible acts are justified because of biological & environmental circumstances? I am really struggling to accept the notion of “it is what it is!”
I began to notice how some people would let the response fly casually as if it was validating. For an example, say, ”what’s going on with the economy?” “It is what it is.” “Did you hear back from the job interview?” ”Man, it is what it is.” “Did you hear about so and so?” “It is what it is!” “What’s your stance with us possibly going to war with Russia or North Korea?” You already know the answer.
And so this nonchalant response has taken on the notion in other words, “It’s just life!” There is nothing you can do about it. Accept the loss and deal with it.
The fact of the matter is humanity is created for the purpose of something far greater than mediocre settlement. Our exclusive purpose is to bring glory to our heavenly father. When we do that we please him greatly and I believe he appreciates our efforts towards pleasing him. The reciprocity of pleasing him allows us to have a better attitude towards life as he smiles back blessings, thus living in a more pleasant state beyond “it is what it is”. I am really stunned when I hear so many believers loosely use the term. Maybe we do it without thinking. In any case, it’s time for a change.
My challenge to you is to move beyond the secular edges of the beach and surf the spiritual shores of the unknown. Faith in action is Hebrews 11:1, which declares, ”Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” This scripture provides the perfect launch pad or spiritual trampoline which inevitably bounces us into the security of our creator. God will always provide an answer. With faith, God takes the impossible and makes all things possible. Hopefully a Man Cave movement will begin and it will sound like this --
With God, it is!
